The gift of G.O.L.F. Anyone tuning in to catch the week’s biggest sporting events — whether it’s football, basketball or golf — has grown accustomed to CBS’ Jim Nantz warmly welcoming the audience with his familiar “Hello, Friends.” Far away from the cameras, Nantz, a Pebble Beach resident and proud philanthropist, turned to another group of friends in the middle of the pandemic to generously raise nearly $550,000 for Pebble Beach Company Foundation. Nantz created an event called G.O.L.F. (Gathering of Lifelong Friends) to raise money for charity and to honor an iconic member of the golf community. In 2020, Nantz chose Sam Reeves as the honoree and Pebble Beach Company Foundation as the event beneficiary. Unfortunately, the gathering was canceled due to the pandemic. Though there was no event, Nantz and his generous friends lived up to their commitment and donated their funds to the Foundation. Pebble Beach Company Foundation’s Company Scholars program began in 1995, and today it is one of the most valuable benefits for employees whose children are attending college or graduate school. This extraordinary gesture will fund five additional college scholarships ($5,000 per school year) in perpetuity, raising the total the Foundation can now award from 23 to 28. The donation is already making a difference. One recipient, Rodrigo, wasn’t sure whether he should accept his admission to UC Santa Cruz, due to the financial stresses of tuition. “I am now proud to say that thanks to your Foundation, I am officially underway to becoming a UC Santa Cruz freshman,” Rodrigo wrote. The news was also celebrated in the Nantz household. “My wife Courtney and I cherish our community and Pebble Beach Company Foundation’s commitment to giving educational opportunities to the children of Pebble Beach Company employees,” Nantz says.
