The 2021 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance raised over $2 million for charity — a figure on par with funds raised in pre-pandemic years. These monies are distributed to the event’s charitable partners and stay in the community. Pebble Beach Concours and Pebble Beach Company are synonymous with excellence, and both have long supported local charities on the Monterey Peninsula and across Monterey County. The Concours, under the leadership of Chairman Sandra Button, has raised over $32 million for local charities since its inception. Through Pebble Beach Company Foundation, its primary charitable partner, Concours funds benefit close to 90 of the region’s best youth-focused nonprofits, impacting the lives of more than 10,000 children each year. Several charities — including the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County, Kinship Center, Montage Health, Natividad Foundation, Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System and United Way Monterey County — benefit directly. “We’re thankful for all of the people who continue to gather at Pebble Beach to celebrate cars and raise funds for people in need — and we’re also grateful for the organizations that make certain these funds get put to good use in our community,” said Button. PEBBLE BEACH CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE HICKORY STICKS INVITATIONAL JoinOurEfforts Supporting Pebble Beach Company Foundation SignatureEvents 16 A Timeless Pebble Beach Tradition. For the past decade, a band of merry golfers, decked out in knickers, have gathered to play a classic round of vintage golf at The Hay. The Hickory Sticks Invitational began as a fun fundraiser in 2010 and has become the flagship event for Pebble Beach Company Foundation each summer. Last year alone, the tournament raised $115,000 for programs and scholarships benefiting Monterey County youth. Players swap out their spin-milled wedges and face-balanced mallets with tungsten inserts for hickory-shafted niblicks and mashies. It’s easy to forget that both the steel shaft and wooden tees weren’t popularized until the mid-1920s. Foregoing both is a wonderful reminder of the skill once required to score a par — a term originally defined as expert play on a hole. The thrill of mastering antique equipment on a course as creative and provocative as The Hay is a unique challenge every golfer should experience. Each hole begins by reaching into a “tee box” to grab a handful of wet sand, which you shape into your tee. That mini sandcastle you build is your best chance to impart spin on your bramble gutta percha or mesh-patterned ball. (They make for cool souvenirs, too!) While the tournament gets everyone’s competitive juices flowing, the Hickory Sticks Invitational also doubles as a social and culinary extravaganza. The renowned Pebble Beach Resorts hospitality team takes care of every player with creative libations and delicious treats during and after your round, creating a truly memorable experience. Hubert Allen, Hickory Sticks Honorary Chair, warmly greets players at the first hole every year. Allen enjoys personally thanking each player for supporting Hickory Sticks and reminds them that it’s all for a great cause — supporting close to 90 of the best youth nonprofits in Monterey County.
