Pebble Beach Company Foundation 2022 Annual Report

6 Bright Spots “Pebble Beach Company Foundation is committed to supporting the most creative and innovative initiatives by local nonprofits in addressing the pressures facing our youth.” Studies indicate that skills acquired from music instruction translate to improved math and language performance, better communication skills and a higher graduation rate. Youth Orchestra Salinas (YOSAL) uses the teaching of music as a vehicle for social transformation in the lives of their students, families and communities. Students in grades 1–12 from underserved areas in Salinas are provided musical instruments, group classes and orchestral instruction. They also have access to academic and mental health support and resources, snacks and a safe and supportive community, all at NO COST to the student. Approximately 17% of local residents live in poverty, making tuitionbased programs inaccessible for many children. Without YOSAL, the city of Salinas would lack a free after-school music program. Through the discipline, persistence and patience required to learn a musical instrument, YOSAL students obtain the skills needed to excel in school, as well as, in their future careers. Rancho Cielo Youth Campus sees challenges as life-changing opportunities. With a comprehensive learning and social services campus, Rancho Cielo transforms Monterey Youth by helping them earn their diplomas, providing education, vocational training, counseling and life skills development in a safe and affirming environment. The five vocational academies — Agriculture, Automotive, Construction, Culinary and High School Diploma — respond to the real-life needs of society through workforce development and college preparation. The Drummond Culinary Academy, supported by Pebble Beach Company Foundation since 2010, helps youth become employable in the culinary and hospitality industries, earning a culinary certificate along with a high school diploma. The program offers job readiness training, as well as, placement and referral services for graduates. Students receive on-the-job training at externships with local restaurants and Rancho Cielo’s very own restaurant, which is open to the public. Brighter Bites is ensuring under-resourced families in the Salinas Valley, known as the Salad Bowl of the World, appreciate and enjoy the fresh fruits and vegetables that have made their hometown world famous. They deliver fresh fruits and vegetables — as well as a healthy serving of education about nutrition — to students and their families. Thanks to the generous donations of local growers, more than 3,500 families across 15 schools are benefiting from this initiative, with many more schools ready to join. “Over 400 families line up to receive their Brighter Bites boxes at our school,” said Veronica Hernandez, principal for Arroyo Seco Academy. “We are proud to partner with Brighter Bites to ensure that our families have access to high-quality, nutritious produce and learn how to use this fresh, local produce to make healthy choices.” Youth Orchestra Salinas Rancho Cielo Youth Campus Brighter Bites — SUSAN MERFELD, PRESIDENT
