The Inspiration and Design Philosophy Behind Fairway One at The Lodge

It’s been a special opportunity to enhance The Lodge experience with new accommodations and facilities along the iconic first hole at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

When Fairway One at The Lodge opens in August, oversized guest rooms tailored for communal, yet exclusive experiences will foster a luxurious residential setting for Buddy Trips unlike any other at Pebble Beach Resorts.

And a gorgeous new Meeting Facility ideal for a wide array of special events will point down the first hole, capturing immersive floor-to-ceiling views of America’s No. 1 Public Course.

Fairway One at The Lodge is outfitted with 38 guest rooms in all — 30 across three elegant two-story buildings, plus two unique four-bedroom golf cottages. To ace this once-in-a-lifetime project, we teamed up with Hirsch Bedner Associates, the No. 1 Design Firm in Hospitality, to help us create a truly unforgettable experience.

We recently caught up with HBA Partner Miguel Baeza, who shed some light on the vision of Fairway One at The Lodge:

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE ARCHITECTURE STYLE OF FAIRWAY ONE?

The design of Fairway One is in keeping with the traditions of the California Bungalow. The ultimate goal was to create a place where the guest can come in and relax after a day out enjoying the wonders of Pebble Beach. We wanted to create a place that feels like home.

HOW DOES FAIRWAY ONE FEEL DIFFERENT FROM OTHER ACCOMMODATIONS AT PEBBLE BEACH RESORTS?

The scale of Fairway One is unique to Pebble Beach. The entire complex has only 38 keys spread out over six buildings. There is a sense of privacy and exclusivity.

HOW DID YOU TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS UNIQUE SETTING ALONG THE FIRST FAIRWAY AT PEBBLE BEACH?

The placement along the first fairway gives another view and experience of the course that is different from the main buildings of The Lodge. Fairway One offers wonderful views of the old growth trees that line portions of the course. The proximity to the lush fairways gives you a genuine sense of the beauty of the course. The building and the rooms are designed to take advantage of these views.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE FEATURE OF FAIRWAY ONE?

The idea that golf is a very social game had a big part in the development of the design. Many who come to Pebble Beach for the golf, or simply for the experience of Pebble Beach, typically do so not by themselves. They come with friends or family.

It is with this in mind that we designed the Fairway One Golf Cottages to be clustered around a central common space. This living room is connected to four bedrooms, each with independent access to the main space. The living room has a wonderful open kitchen, a large dining area and a living area with a stacked-stone fireplace. The idea is to create a true residential atmosphere where you can feel at home no matter where you live.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE GUESTS TO NOTICE WHEN STAYING AT FAIRWAY ONE?

We want guests notice the difference in the experience between The Lodge and Fairway One. The idea that you can stay at The Lodge on one visit and then Fairway One on the next and have a unique experience at both is very important.
